June Newsletter

Central London SABSA Study Session
Tuesday 8th July (Venue TBC)

Summer greetings from The SABSA Institute!

Here are some updates for the month of June.

The SABSA Institute Board of Trustees Update

Robert Laurie has decided to step down from his position and has tendered his resignation as a member of the Board of Trustees. The SABSA Institute wishes to extend our appreciation to Rob for his contributions, commitment and long years of service to the Board, the Institute and the wider SABSA community. Thank you Rob and we wish you all the very best.

COSAC 2025 Early-Bird Registration ends on 30th June

The SABSA Institute is sponsoring the COSAC 2025 Information Security Conference which will take place in Naas, Ireland from 28th September to 2nd October. The agenda includes a full SABSA Stream across four days as well as a non-SABSA stream. The SABSA Institute was formed at the COSAC Security Conference by TSI Founders David Lynas, John Sherwood and Zika Milenkovic.

COSAC Security Conferences are designed to push boundaries and ideas in Cybersecurity, Privacy, Compliance, Governance, Risk, Business-Driven Security, Architecture, Technology, Cloud, AI and more. These conferences are unique in that they have tracks dedicated to SABSA and highly exceptional because there are limits to the number of attendees, an absence of vendors and sales pitches, and frequent challenges of speaker ideas by attendees in a collegial and safe environment.

At COSAC 2025, you will find:

  • The 9th COSAC ‘Design Off’: a repeat favourite in the spirit of a hack-a-thon for Security Architects to apply their skills in a safe environment. This masterclass has been specially created for individuals with various skills and experiences to work as teams, and while only one team gets to win, everyone who participates stands to gain invaluable insights and experiences.
  • The SABSA Institute (TSI) Forum: where TSI and the TSI Liaison Group (LG) update. The TSI Forum includes a Question-and-Answer session and an opportunity to meet and interact with the TSI Board of Trustees (Directors) and LG members. This is a great platform to find out more about TSI’s activities to benefit members as well as volunteer opportunities.
  • Many other timely, relevant, valuable, and unique presentations and workshops where attendees can interact and challenge ideas, concepts, methodologies, and approaches.

COSAC is a fantastic way to introduce colleagues to SABSA and to also witness and experience how SABSA is being applied by other individuals and organisations. COSAC also has a Patron programme that provides unique access to register for upcoming Patrons only events and access to exclusive content.

Participation in COSAC is highly recommended for all who would like to learn more about SABSA and Cybersecurity firsthand. For registration or more information, please visit: https://cosac.net

The COSAC 2025 schedule is available online here.

Early-bird registration ends on 30th June, so book your tickets today.

The Open Group Summit, Amsterdam
19th to 22nd May

By Steven Bradley

At the end of 2024, The Open Group republished the SABSA T100 White Paper (Modelling SABSA® with ArchiMate®) as an approved guide in The Open Group library. Although this paper has been available via The SABSA Institute for five years, this was the first opportunity to present its objective, contents and most importantly, what can be created using it, to The Open Group membership. Demand for a deeper integration of the security perspective into ArchiMate has been apparent for several years, so it must have come a quite a surprise to some that this Guide was so complete and mature in, what to them is, the Version 1.0. With this awareness to The Open Group’s 100,000 strong community, we are hopeful and confident that further interest will be sparked in the SABSA methodology that underpins the techniques described in this paper.

SABSA World

SABSA World is the banner under which SABSA community members and practitioners can organise events and gatherings to connect with one another. SABSA World can be an evening talk, a weekday lunch, a study group or a casual social networking event and may be regularly scheduled or spontaneous and occasional.

All SABSA World activities are intended to be a welcoming space for everyone – and all are welcome – seasoned SABSA practitioners or just the SABSA-curious alike.

SABSA Study Session – Tuesday 8th July | Central London (Venue TBC)

Working on a SABSA paper? Stuck on a security architecture challenge? Or just need a few smart minds to bounce ideas off?

Join us for an informal SABSA Study Session on Tuesday 8th July in central London. Whether you’re refining an exam submission, tackling a tricky security architecture project at work, or looking for some fresh perspective, this is a potential chance to connect with others doing the same.

No slides, no pressure – just support, shared thinking, and a bit of good old-fashioned nerdy chat. One may not have all the answers – but with a few of us in the room, we just might!

The session will only go ahead if there’s enough interest. So if you’re up for it, do drop Simon Cross a line.

Let’s help each other move things forward – and maybe even have some fun while we’re at it!

What are the Liaison Groups?

The SABSA Institute (TSI) Liaison Groups (LGs) act as an advisory group to the TSI Board of Trustees, advocating for the interests of TSI Members within their region and fostering community growth.

There are currently two LGs, one representing Asia Pacific (APAC, southern hemisphere) and one representing Europe, Middle East, The Americas and Africa (EMEA, northern hemisphere).

New Liaison Groups may be established by motivated and organised TSI Members with the support of the TSI Board. This will allow for better support and representation of local members.

What do Liaison Group members do?

Joining an LG is a volunteer commitment for those who are interested to take an active role in connecting and growing the global community of SABSA practitioners.

General expectations of LG members include:

  • Growing active community engagement with TSI Members
  • Encouraging TSI Members’ participation in TSI projects
  • Engaging with TSI Members to understand their needs
  • Creating bonds of mutual support between LGs
  • Advising the Board on how to best serve TSI Members
  • Advocating for TSI Member interests to the Board
  • Attending LG regular meetings

Interested in joining a Liaison Group?

Both EMEA & NA and APAC LGs welcome expressions of interest from community members who are keen to join. TSI Members can join either group, based on their time zone, location or preference.

Members who would like to join an LG are encouraged to write in to:

EMEA & NA LG

APAC LG

TSI Training and Certification

SABSA training is available through the TSI network of Accredited Education Partners (AEPs). Our training covers all levels in the SABSA training continuum from Foundation to Practitioner.

Certification by TSI is competency-based and requires candidates to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities required to use the SABSA method in the real world. SABSA Certification Examinations can only be taken after completion of training provided by a TSI AEP.

For more details, please refer to the TSI AEP website.

Upcoming Courses

A schedule of all upcoming SABSA-approved (non-certification based) and SABSA official (certification-based) courses can be found on our website here.
