Talk Night with David Lynas

Sydney 24th March and Melbourne 25th March

Greetings from The SABSA Institute!

Here are some updates for the month of March, starting with SABSA World Australia.

SABSA World Australia Cocktail Event – Melbourne

Over 20 Security Architects attended SABSA World Australia’s cocktail party in Melbourne, Australia. The event was held the evening before the COSAC APAC Security Conference which was sponsored by The SABSA Institute.

Attendees were gifted party favors containing the first SABSA World Australia merchandise including stickers and a lanyard. Many participants of the event stayed until the venue closed and spoke warmly of the experience.

SABSA World

SABSA World is the banner under which SABSA community members and practitioners can organise events and gatherings to connect with one another. SABSA World can be an evening talk, a weekday lunch, a study group or a casual social networking event and may be regularly scheduled or spontaneous and occasional.

All SABSA World activities are intended to be a welcoming space for everyone – and all are welcome – seasoned SABSA practitioners or just the SABSA-curious alike.

Talk Night with David Lynas

Sydney and Melbourne, 24th and 25th March

SABSA co-founder David Lynas will be delivering a talk on ‘How to solve complex security problems with SABSA’ in Sydney on Monday, 24th March and Melbourne on Tuesday, 25th March.

In this session, we will explore:

  • Enterprise Security Architecture: What exactly is it and why is it valuable?
  • A framework for holistic understanding and management of security and risk
  • The concept of traceability to connect solutions with business goals
  • The importance of choosing a framework that can be scaled and calibrated to tomorrow’s challenges
  • The approach to providing a common language and common structures with which to cross domain boundaries and enhance collaboration
  • Resolve the specialist risk dilemma and provide stakeholders with an answer to the “So what?” questions

There will be time for questions and discussion after the talk, and we encourage you to be prepared to share. Light catering will also be provided.

Register quickly to reserve your ticket today! (Registration links are provided below.)

What are the Liaison Groups?

The SABSA Institute (TSI) Liaison Groups (LGs) act as an advisory group to the TSI Board of Trustees, advocating for the interests of TSI Members within their region and fostering community growth.

There are currently two LGs, one representing Asia Pacific (APAC, southern hemisphere) and one representing Europe, Middle East, The Americas and Africa (EMEA, northern hemisphere).

New Liaison Groups may be established by motivated and organised TSI Members with the support of the TSI Board. This will allow for better support and representation of local members.

What do Liaison Group members do?

Joining an LG is a volunteer commitment for those who are interested to take an active role in connecting and growing the global community of SABSA practitioners.

General expectations of LG members include:

  • Growing active community engagement with TSI Members
  • Encouraging TSI Members’ participation in TSI projects
  • Engaging with TSI Members to understand their needs
  • Creating bonds of mutual support between LGs
  • Advising the Board on how to best serve TSI Members
  • Advocating for TSI Member interests to the Board
  • Attending LG regular meetings

Interested in joining a Liaison Group?

Both EMEA & NA and APAC LGs welcome expressions of interest from community members who are keen to join. TSI Members can join either group, based on their time zone, location or preference.

Members who would like to join an LG are encouraged to write in to:

TSI Training and Certification

SABSA training is available through the TSI network of Accredited Education Partners (AEPs). Our training covers all levels in the SABSA training continuum from Foundation to Practitioner.

Certification by TSI is competency-based and requires candidates to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities required to use the SABSA method in the real world. SABSA Certification Examinations can only be taken after completion of training provided by a TSI AEP.

For more details, please refer to the TSI AEP website.

Upcoming Courses

A schedule of all upcoming SABSA-approved (non-certification based) and SABSA official (certification-based) courses can be found on our website here.

SAB[S]Akery: The Story of ESA Architects Turned Bakers – Esther Schagen-van Luit

Creating security architecture for a real-life organization can be a daunting task. As we model all aspects of the business, our diagrams grow more complex and we need longer to move through the architectural layers. It could help budding architects to first apply SABSA to a very simple situation before moving into real-life territory. Enter SA B[S]Akery.

The goal of this session is to show how part of the SABSA methodology can be applied to a simplified case study, and thereby provide greater clarity on how to approach complex environments. Secondly, it aims to show the usefulness of SABSA in a variety of situations beyond the information security of large corporations to which it is often applied. This case study serves as the basis for the presenter’s SABSA exam papers.

Aligning SABSA and the ISA/IEC 62443 Standard Series – Bruce Large

An introduction to Operational Technology (OT) and why SABSA works well in helping show alignment in architecture within the ISA/IEC 62443 standard. These slides from the live presentation are a useful reference and show a number of interesting views and insights of how to use SABSA to plan and operate with OT environments.
